What really happened to Blackdom, New Mexico?

Join us on Monday, October 2, 2023 at 7:00 pm at Carlsbad Museum.

Our October program is a program on Blackdom, New Mexico presented by Dr. Timothy E. Nelson, recognized expert Blackdom Historian — The presentation centers on the history of the early 20th century Southeastern New Mexico black settlement, the only autonomous black community in New Mexico created at the onset of the 20th century.

Dr. Nelson will be reading excerpts from his book ‘Blackdom, New Mexico: The Significance of the Afro-Frontier, 1900-1930’ and will follow with a Q&A session.  There will be signed copies of Dr. Nelson’s book available after the event for $50. Alternatively, the book can be purchased directly through TTU Press, Here.

Dr. Nelson is the expert Historian on Blackdom, a historian of Black and Ethnic Studies, an Artist, and a full-time lecturer. His multi-faceted work concerns racism, ambition, and the search for opportunity. These themes were revealed in his 2015 Ph.D. dissertation The Significance of the Afro-Frontier in American History. Dr. Nelson was born in South Central LA, raised in Compton, during the early 1990s in the wake of race and class-based conflict with the LAPD. After receiving a Football scholarship, he graduated from New Mexico State University with a Bachelor’s degree in U.S. History. He earned his Ph.D. from (UTEP) the University of Texas at El Paso.
